About the Three VIA Surveys
1. The VIA Survey of Character (VIA-IS) is a comprehensive, scientifically validated tool for measuring character strengths. The 240 questions elicit your unique constellation of strengths and identify your top signature strengths. Signature strengths are those you most frequently express. The survey takes about 30 to 45 minutes. You may receive your results in one of two ways:
Option 1: An immediate report of your character strengths in
top-down order, with a brief description of each strength. The report
is free.
Option 2: VIA Interpretive Report: This is a detailed, 17-page report of your individual character strengths. You'll see five graphs that include your raw data scores; your percentile ranking compared to people of similar age, education and gender; your strengths loaded into the virtue categories; and where your signature strengths fall: head vs. heart and self vs. others.
You may purchase your report for $40 when you complete your survey. Students may enter a discount coupon code in the box provided for a student rate of $20. Students, if you do not have a discount coupon code, email
lparker@viacharacter.org to request one. A student email box is required.
Consultants may purchase codes on behalf of any number of clients. Rate reductions begin for groups of 11 or more. The code is immediately emailed to the consultant when the purchase is complete. Clients then enter the code when requested as they begin to take the VIA Survey on Character. Their reports are emailed to the consultant - the purchaser of the code - to review and present to each client.

2. The Brief Strengths Test is a different measure altogether (not a shorter version of the VIA-IS), also created by Dr. Christopher Peterson. It's fun, but has not been validated, and research is not permitted using the Brief Strengths Test. It is a 24-question survey of character strengths for adults. You will receive an immediate, free ranking of character strengths in top-down order with brief strengths descriptions.
3. The VIA Youth Survey is for young people, ages 10 to17. It has 198 questions and takes about 40 minutes to complete.You will receive an immediate, free ranking of character strengths in top-down order with brief strengths descriptions.
The VIA Survey is free of charge to all through a grant from the Manuel D.and Rhoda Mayerson Foundation, Cincinnati, Ohio. It was created by Dr. Christopher Peterson, who also created the Briefs Strengths Test. The VIA Youth Survey was authored by Dr. Nansook Park.
